Stay of the week: Mercer Barcelona

Snapshot: Medieval history meets super stylish design in a stunning restored palace in the Gothic Quarter

The Mercer Barcelona

Set into the age-old walls of the Gothic streets of Barcelona lies this gem of a small palace, now boutique hotel that just oozes history.  The loving restoration has retained the history of the building from the 1st to the 19th centuries; an ancient defense tower that was once part of the Roman wall that surrounded the city, Gothic windows, neoclassic balconies, frescos and medieval wooden ceilings, and now, all of it has been transformed and brought up to date by the Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, whose clever merging of the old and new has created a spectacular masterpiece. Stay of the week: Galatasaray House Hotel, Istanbul

In a nutshell: Elegantly old and gorgeously modern mansion with spacious avant-garde rooms in the old antiquey part of Cukurcuma.

The most accurate way we can think to describe House Hotel Galatasaray (henceforth known as HHG) is “private mansion type of funky boutique hotel”.  Continue reading

Stay of the week: Tierra Atacama, Chile

Snapshot: Adventure and modern architecture in the stark, stunning landscape of the Atacama Desert

In the dramatic, mountainous moonlike landscape of Atacama lies an outstanding boutique hotel that mixes old, with bang up to date modernity.  Built on the site of an old cattle corral Tierra Atacama uses local stone, adobe and rough-hewn wood to blend into this astonishing environment but beyond these traditional materials lies a thoroughly modern concept.  Continue reading

Stay of the week: Monteverdi, Tuscany

In a snapshot: A medieval hilltop village where history and contemporary, glamorous and rustic meet to create a unique cultural experience.

It’s something many of us have dreamt of, and perhaps something not many have done.  Which is: whilst on holiday (in this case Tuscany in Italy), fallen in love with the landscape, the food and people and thought, “let’s buy a property Continue reading

Stay of the week: Delta Dunes, Kenya Coast

In a snapshot: Flip flop luxury, “castaway” style in this remote coastal lodge sitting in the midst of 50kms of untouched white sand dunes with ocean on one side and grunting hippos the other.

The Delta Dunes Lodge sits right in the middle and on top enormous white sand dunes. Shaded by doum palms, baobabs and tamarind trees the lodge looks out on one side upon the Indian Ocean and endless mile upon mile of vast uninterrupted surf-kissed beachfront Continue reading

Stay of the week: Areias do Seixo, Lisbon Coast, Portugal

In a snapshot: Stylish eco-friendly boutique hotel with beautiful rooms and a handful of self-catering villas, nestled in the sand dunes on the Silver Coast, just 1 hour north of Lisbon

An hour north of Lisbon, on a stretch of incredibly deserted sand dunes lies a brand new gem, just waiting to be discovered.   Tired of never finding a hotel they liked, Marta Fonseca and Gonçalo Alves set about creating one themselves and they have done it in style. Environmentally friendly (there is even a meter charting minute by minute water and electricity consumption from the kitchen to the spa in reception) Areias do Seixo (yes, we found the name difficult to pronounce as well), roughly translated as “place of pebbles” has been designed to be in tune with nature.  Whilst the building is spanking new concrete and glass the interior is very different.  The décor has been inspired by the colours and warmth from Cape Verde to Marrakech, driftwood from the beaches can be found Continue reading
