Luxury doesn’t have to have a purse busting price tag so here are our favourite 6 hotels that definitely do not scrimp on the luxe-factor and which staggeringly come in at under £150 per night.
The only thing to say? Be quick to book!
Small and gorgeously intimate, you’ll be cocooned in Kelly Hoppen rooms with natural earthy colours where East meets West and antiques fuse with modern technology, sink into a deep purple banquette at the elPassatge del Murmuri Restaurant for Asian cuisine or spill out onto the terrace at Bar Marfil in warmer months and munch on “platillos” (small dishes) – the baby broad bean salad with duck ham paired with a chilled and crisp glass of Verdejo looks stunning.
Superior Room from: £111 / €143/ US$157
Hotel Bontadosi, Umbria, Italy
In the heart of gorgeous higgledy Montefalco the Bontadosi is smart and white on the outside, with an inside that is fresh and modern yet full of restrained renaissance glory. There’s a swish little bar for your aperitivi, a sleek Mediterranean cuisine restaurant opening onto the Piazza and a small guest only spa for pampering (hot stone body or detox honey facial massage anyone?), not forgetting a view of the surrounding valley and countryside that will make you sigh with happiness. And if you happen to be passing in August, don’t miss Montefalco’s very own “Running of the Bulls” festival…
Superior Room from: £110 /€140/ US$154
Farol Design Hotel, Cascais, just outside Lisbon
Planted at the edge of the cliffs (the waves practically lap the swimming pool) this is part 19th century mansion (and that includes a lighthouse) and daring 21st century architectural design. Some rooms have been fitted out Portuguese fashion designers but centre stage goes to the entertainment spaces; a gorgeously cosy bar with devilishly comfortable armchairs, a Mediterranean fusion restaurant, a sushi bar and a show stopping, super sexy terrace and pool. Decked out with white cushioned sun-loungers and umbrellas, it’s just the place to hide away, surrounded by nothing but the sound of the ocean. Super stylish.
Double Sea View from: £134 / €173 / US$190
Riad Zôlah, Marrakech
Riad Zôlah has been formed from two traditional Marrakchi courtyard homes. The main courtyard is serenely traditional with mosaics and plants whilst the second has a heated plunge pool for cooling dips (there is even a counter current machine if you need a bit more exercise or head down to the hamman or have a massage if that sounds a little bit too hard). Inside, there are only 12 bedrooms and the large dark hand carved doors and woodwork, intricate tadelakt alcoves, scattered cushions and rose petals and candle lit lanterns create a unique and utterly romantic atmosphere.
Unik Prestige from £130 / €164 / US$186
Hôtel Edgar, Paris
Edgar has been tempting locals in the know to this little spot ever since owner Guillaume Rouget opened his restaurant, transforming a dilapidated clothing workshop into a place where Parisians could spend long happy afternoons on the large sunny terrace in a small quiet tree lined square, choosing from a contemporary French menu and sipping on chilled rose. In the Spring of 2013 Guillaume revealed his 13 creatively designed rooms and travellers looking for a funky place to stay, a stunning restaurant and a historic location became very excited indeed. The owner’s friends, an extremely talented collection of photographers, artists, filmmakers, graphic and fashion designers, have created a stunning array of rooms, each with its own personality and character, from Kenyan wildlife reserve to log cabin to a stylish photographer’s darkroom. Come for eccentric fabulous style, salted butter cookies in the room and lazy lunches on the terrace.
Charmer room from from £132 / €170 / US$193
Masseria Montelauro, Puglia
A achingly beautifully restored masseria nestled amongst the olive groves, its whitewashed stone walls offset with pale blue shutters shining in the sun. Since being built in the 1800s, the masseria has served as a monastery, herbal pharmacy, disco and restaurant. Now it offers stylish and sophisticated Mediterranean minimalist chic – there are traditional stone floors and barrel-vaulted ceilings, furnishings are a mix of contemporary and antique with a Moroccan twist, rooms come with wrought-iron beds, wooden furniture, arched ceilings, gorgeous stone-and-marble bathrooms and flowing white drapes. With an unhurried and laid back atmosphere this is a fabulously elegant and very stylish place to stay.
